Eclipse brings us back to Forks and Twilight

Review Date: August 7, 2007
Reviewer: Amy Wallace, San Rafael, CA United States
Twilight introduced us to Bella Swan and the mysterious Cullen's a family of vampires. New Moon pulled Bella and Edward Cullen apart, and tested their love and introduced us to Jacob and the battle between wolves and vampires. It also left us hanging with a decision about Bella and immortality: when?

Eclipse is different. We return to the town of Forks and find that nothing much has changed. Graduation is closer than ever (after which, the Cullen's have agreed to make Bella a vampire) and a serial killer is loose in Seattle. Bella cannot see Jacob, her best friend because he is a Werewolf, and due to her ties to the vampires, it would break treaties and bonds made between them.

As the days go by, and graduation gets closer and closer, Bella must choose her fate. She wants to become immortal and be with Edward, but she must give up her family to do so. She is also worried about the change: will she be able to be "vegetarian" like the Cullen Family, and refrain from human blood? Or will her new blood lust cause her to kill innocent people?

The serial killer that is in Seattle turns out to be supernatural: newborn vampires on the loose. This brings up even more issues for Bella and her decision to become immortal. Not that anything could ever persuade her to give Edward up, but it makes the choice more difficult by showing her the realities of becoming a vampire.

Without spoiling the plot: Jacob wants more from Bella too, which makes the choice even more difficult. Must Bella choose between the love of her life and her best friend?

Eclipse is yet another installment of a series I desperately hope will continue. I want to continue watching the characters grow and change, and find out what their lives will unfold to be like. I am already anxious for the next in the series! Write more, Stephenie Meyer!
Obsession- Preface of Breaking Dawn and First Chapter

Review Date: June 1, 2008
Reviewer: 4ever1, NOVA,
This review is about the first chapter and preface of Breaking Dawn - sold in the special edition of Eclipse. Stephenie Meyer gives us a sneak peak into what looks to be another wonderful addition to the Twilight series. The preface is intriguing and makes us wonder who Bella is with while she is thinking such dark thoughts. Clearly, this is another book about obsession. The first chapter is awesome. We see Bella has matured and is walking toward her chosen path trying to keep her head held high. The first chapter was unexpected as well. What is great about the first chapter is that Bella is alone outside her house engaged in an activity. Bella hasn't been alone since the middle of New Moon so this was an interesting scene.

This sneak peak also gave us the reactions of Charlie and Renee to Bella and Edward's news and through Bella's memories we see how Charlie reacted when Bella and Edward told him of their plans. Unexpectedly, we see a friendship has formed between Esme and Renee amidst all the planning and Seth and Edward have remained friendly.

We also get a bit of information about what Jacob has been up to since receiving Edward's invitation at the end of Eclipse. For Jacob fans this might be upsetting. There is enough vagueness to make one think Jacob will have a pivotal role in the fourth book in the series and the last book from Bella's perspective.

It is disappointing that the publisher won't allow the author to post these chapters to her website which is seemingly related to them trying to get teenagers and adults to purchase Eclipse a second time. This marketing ploy is a tad upsetting. These books have sold very well on the first round and to try and get people to buy the book a second time because "we" are obsessed with these characters is a bit over the top and it appears a bit unethical. Actually, the behavior of the publishing company is a bit predatory. Personally, I went to the book store and read the chapters there and I recommend you all do the same. Breaking Dawn will be out soon enough and why pay for the first chapter twice and Eclipse twice?

I work hard to earn my money, don't you?

Reading the third installment in the Twilight series was as satisfying to me as munching through a bag of dark chocolate M&Ms. The big ones.

Because, after all, Eclipse is BIG--629 pages--and in this volume of the story about Bella Swan, a mortal teenager, and vampire Edward Cullen, several big What If questions are explored: What if Bella decides once-and-for-all to become a vampire like Edward; how can she possibly know when she's ready? What if Edward relents and redraws his "many careful lines" for his physical relationship with Bella? What would it look like if something so evil were to terrorize the Olympic Peninsula that Bella's good vampires and her werewolf friends had to try to unite to fight it, despite their ancient animosity? And how would Bella's closest friend Jacob, probably the swiftest of the Quileute werewolves, compete with her supposedly true love Edward for her eternal devotion?

Once again, Stephenie Meyer has written a compelling and often humorous sequel set in the lush environment surrounding the small town of Forks, Washington. Her colorful characters feel like real people rather than types--a big thing for me. And what situations could've been written morosely or indelicately came off instead as, well, as a kind of sensuous elegance. Even though the more private moments of pain or pleasure were described honestly, with realistic detail, they weren't stripped of their intimacy by such telling. That impressed me. And there are lots of these kinds of moments throughout the book. I just ate it up.

One thing that might bog down readers is the tremendous amount of backstory that must be covered in order for the action and some characters' points of view to make sense. It makes for a lot of exposition (as opposed to plain ol' action), even when the stories are coming out of the characters' mouths. But at least the stories are told in varied styles, according to the characters relating them, so monotony is not an issue. It's just a LOT of information to keep straight.

Even so, unlike a bag of M&Ms, Eclipse did not give me a bellyache once I finished it. It has left me wanting more. And so I wait for book four...
Sick of Bella

Okay, so I am not a teenager, nor am I a girl...but I think Meyers has done a fantastic job at writing a very cohesice series. All 4 novels hold your attention. The movies have also been great, and honestly, I can't wait to see ECLIPSE. On one hand, though, I am really sick of Bella, and began to feel that way from the very beginning of the first book. She is way too whinny, even for a teenager. I remember my days as a teen, and yes, you do have moments of melancholy, joy, rejection and happiness...but hers is almost bi-polar. I am not sure what Edward or Jacob..or for that matter Mike or any of the other male characters see in her. She is a whinny spoiled girl, not appealing and honestly not attractive (in any sense). The best ending would be for Edward and Jacob to run off together and just dump Bella!
The Male Perspective

Is there ever truly just one fated love in your life? What happens when your first love leaves you, crushes you, and you still survive but not as you once were? What happens when you go from loving the icy vampire to the warm werewolf? Welcome to Bella's world.
Perhaps the biggest change in the series so far is the fact that Bella begins to realize that love found her after Edward vanished. Even though her heart remained his, eventually she began to wake a bit and to find love again.
This book finds Bella now considering the things that she will have to deal with when she becomes a vampire. She learns the disturbing history of another Cullen who was made a vampire after being destroyed by her intended. Bella learns that not all the vampires wish her to give up her mortality so quickly. She also begins to face what she is leaving behind. The parents she cares for, the few friends she has made, even the every day things like graduating that the rest of her family of vampires want her to enjoy.
Bella also has her life and love tested by Jacob. Can the boy who you considered your sun, your friend, and someone you finally admit you do love compete with Edward. The nice thing that Stephenie Meyer gives you here is a deep growth in Bella. What happens when you find you have two true loves in your life? Is there a way to balance that life? What happens when neither is totally human and both are mortal enemies? Just where will the human heart lead Bella?
I'll agree with the friend from college who got me to read the first book. It is like getting hooked on a drug. You just can't wait for Mrs. Meyer to finish the last book and find out just where Bella's life or death may bring her.
I'm glad I waited to read the series until a few weeks ago . . .

Wow, what can I say. I really loved this book. I was surprised, I am 44 and started reading the twilight series by chance just for something to do while my husband watched football. I became so engrossed in the books that I read all 4 in just 6 days. The amazing thing is I am not a reader. These were the first books I have read in more than 5 years.

I cannot recommend these books by SM enough. They are so vividly discriptive and she teases you so well by writing almost what you want to happen and then pulling back at the right moment.

I am a Jacob Black fan. The way SM has written the series I am always pulling for him and I feel so much compassion for his character.
Will Jacob's relationship eclipse Edward?

If you liked Twilight and wasn't as excited about New Moon, you will love Eclipse. There's love (of course), vampires, werewolves, and a series of killings.

What's nice about this one is that both Edward and Jacob are present. Although quite different, both add interesting elements to the story and the Bella/Edward/Jacob triangle. The reader learns more of the werewolves and the stories of some of the vampires. Finally, Bella realizes things aren't as simple as 'happily ever after' if she becomes a vampire. Funny thing is, as immature as Jacob can be, it is their relationship that causes Bella to grow up a little and think things thru a little more than just 'me & Edward' - something Edward's been trying to do since book 1.

For me, Edward is the character than draws me into the story. Meyer does an excellent job of conveying Edward's wit and charm in his behavior and dialogue as in Twilight. Although his love for Bella can sometimes make him come across as a little weak or pathetic, this is simply because of his struggle in realizing he can't give Bella somethings he wishes he could or that he feels she needs. The scene in the woods when it is Jacob's body heat that protects Bella is a clear indicator of this. Edward comes across as the 'bigger person' throughout this novel understanding that Jacob was there for Bella when he wasn't. Eclipse continues building on the relationship between Bella/Edward/Jacob and finally forces Bella to make a decision.
So I am the only person who despises Bella after this book???

I want to say first off that I gave the book 5 stars because I was hooked from the start and really love certain characters in this series. I am a huge fan of this series-up until the final installment. HOWEVER, when I finished this book, and especially after I re read it, I really hated the protagonist Bella.

She is the only one in this 'love triangle' that I hate (and I use love triangle loosely, because is there ever a question who she will 'choose'? It would have been nice if there was even SOME question) I liked Bella in the first 2 books, I related to her in the first, and grieved for/with her in the second. But in Eclipse she is abhorrent. She treats Edward like crap, kind of cheating on him in some ways, and treats Jacob like disposable garbage, leading him on in one moment, calling him a jerk the next. In her mind, he exists for her to torture and play with his emotions. By the end of the book I wanted them both to dump her whiny, ungrateful rear.

Alice, Edwards vamp sister, does things for Bella, along with the rest of the Cullens, and Bella complains. Hey Bella, if someone gives you a gift, how about just saying thank you? And Edward wants to marry her, and she scoffs at that. OK-make me yours for all eternity, but marriage is just EWW-what is that about?? I think part of the issue may be the author wasn't sure herself what to do with the triangle, because she wasn't prepared for Jacob's character to develop a fan base.

The end standoff between Victoria and Edward was great, along with the teaming up of wolves and vampires. I also enjoyed the bromance that developed between Edward and Jacob, it was touching when they chatted in the tent. I really felt for Jacob, he was kind of innocent in the whole mess, and Edward understood this.

By the end of the book, I loved Jacob and Edward, and wish they could both do better then Bella!
Finally

Finally, Bella is done with her moping and can get on with life. Edward is back, life is good. This book is so much better than New Moon it shocked me. New Moon was awful, so I had no high expectatins for Eclipse. However, I read it and loved it. The action and suspense The 2nd book was lacking is back. Victoria is building an army to kill Bella, and it's for revenge (ah, a sensible notion). Edward is back, and we start to see Bella's better side.
I rated this five star because I loved it. However, I just want to say: To all of you who dislike possesive guys, Edward isn't for you. He acts so over-protective of Bella when she tries to see the werewolves it is obnoxious. That is all that I had wrong with Eclipse.
What I did like is that we finally see a bit of peace between the wolves and vampires. They work together to defeat Victoria's army. That I like. And someone actually gets hurt! YAY!! Meyer has realized people get injured. Unfortunatly it wasn't a super-perfect-I'm untouchable vampire. No, it was poor Jacob, who knows Bella has chosen Edward over him and still won't give up hope. Poor kid.
And I love the twist Meyer put on the book, with Jacob in love with Bella (for now). I think this helps Bella become a better character, because at last, she has to make a hard choice, between two guys she loves.
I have to say, in this book the characters are much more realistic than in Twilight and especially New Moon. I recommend this to anyone.

Reviewer: Twilight Addict,

After reading 'Twilight' I found myself thirsty for more! I had not read for years but, the whole 'Twilight Saga' had me racing through every book and I found it hard to put each one down. 'Eclipse' was just as good and did not disappoint. In this book Victoria comes back to take revenge after Edward killed her partner James, Jacob fights for Bella's love - not always fairly, and the Cullens and Quileute pack work together. READ IT NOW - you will not be disappointed!

Along with all the other twilight books in the series, i finished Eclipse within a day. SUre all the books are great, but this one was my favorite. Bella is annoying at times and lacks confidence, but overall the characters are intriguing and the plot is quite entertaining.

Jacob comes off as the adventerous careless one which is why i think most girls despise him. They get the feel that he is just trying to steal Bella from Edward from the moment he turns into a werewolf. Edward is the "dream guy" that all girls wish they had and despise bella for having. He says YES to anything she wants and never wants to hurt her. Bella is the whiney, annoying, clumsy, yet so desperate to be loved one. i liked her in the beginning of New Moon, but she just has some qualities that would be best not mentioned.

While reading this book i fell in love with jacob only because you can't really blame him for being the way he is. I blame it all on Bella for leading him on in times of need then turning him down as soon as edward returns. He basically ammuses me throughout the book with his wittiness and rude, but true, comments.Of course Edward is lovealble too, but i refuse to take sides.

It is very upsetting to see all the negative comments on Stephanie Meyers books. Especially on this specific one. Her first novel was based on finding true love. The second one went through the path of Losing true love. and the third was supposed to be focused on Choosing between true love. I felt as if i was facing the same situations at times. Jacob brings most of the Humor in the book which is another reason why i loved him. Edward was more for flattery which in my opinion, Bella didn't deserve. The murder mystery in the book and the rising events kept me on the edge of my seat, turning each page until i found myself almost crying on chapter 26. The ending of the book was what made me want to buy the fourth book right away! it ends in jacobs perspective which i think shows the readers a little bit of an understanding side to Jacob Black and what he has to go through.

People who have high expectations should really just drop it. dont expect anything. just read it not based on a review by some angry people who couldn't relate, but because you feel drawn to such a fantasy. It shouldn't be read by people who judge too much on what a person is doing. there were moments where each character pissed me off in some way but i eventually got over it by the actions they took furtherwise.

COmedy mixed in with fantasy and some relativity. It has a high dose of enthusiasm and a whooping "OMG WHAT JUST HAPPENED!?" in it. Hhahaha its a really great book and i recommend to anyone who has an open mind to new concepts.

I loved this book I couldn't put it down there was so much going on! The love story continues and gets more complicated with the danger of Victoria still out for revenge. I was so conflicted I'm so fond of Jacob but Edward IS Bella's heart. She's a teenager in the beginning of this book but by the end she has grown into a woman. An absolutely great read CANNOT WAIT til they get this on film it will be amazing!

This is a very well written and exciting book series. Each book gets better than the next. I zoomed right through it in 2 days.

The great thing about this series is that it can be read comfortably for teens and adults. Descriptive but not too sexually so for teens. I would let my teenagers read it comfortably.

Brilliant, enchanting, suspsenseful, romantic. How else could I describe this book? It was difficult for me to put down, probably as hard as it was for Edward and Bella to stay away from each other. This book picked up where "New Moon" left off and it left me breathless. Simply amazing. I highly recommend this series!!
